Tuesday's Outfit...

So I've decided to finally start documenting my outfits in this little journal from Marukai (a cheap Japanese store) that my brother gave me. It's filled with lovely kraft paper and for the longest time I didn't really know what to do with it.

Since I have been 'decluttering my life' and donated 5 large bags of clothing, my closet is filled with simple pieces, which actually is very fitting with Simply Newtral, right? So with that, I probably won't be drawing outfits on the daily, only when there's something different to draw. Although, my style is quite uniform nowadays, but I'll try to change it up a bit with accessories or whatever. Anyway, here's today's outfit:

I hope you guys enjoy these outfit posts! Stay tuned for more :)

Less is More.

I know this isn't art related but this is something I'd like to share with my fellow readers :)

A few months ago, I came across this trailer for an upcoming documentary about Minimalism. For a gal like me that loves simplicity, this 1:10 video stuck to me.

Months later, thoughts of this video came back to me and I decided to look up more videos about it. It led me to this Ted Talks video with The Minimalists themselves, Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. So motivating, so inspirational!

If you're not in the mood to watch these videos, basically Minimalism is a lifestyle. It's a sense of freedom from worry, stress, discontent, depression and clutter.

We live in a world where we were brought up to strive for this "American Dream" and trying to obtain that rich life that everyone seems to covet every single day. Having a career that pays well, having a big house, an expensive car, the latest gadgets & fashion items and just accumulating so much in order to give us this temporary happiness. There's definitely nothing wrong with any of these things, but when you have too much of it, when you feel that you've got everything you've wished for...it ends up making you less happy.

Now, I'm no where near being rich. I've always told myself that when I get married and have my own family that we will live a simple life. I don't want to spend my money on material things because honestly, I was never really materialistic to begin with. Sure, a gal loves a good pair of shoes but I'm not going to go buy a new pair every week or when I get my paycheck. I've learned to spend my money on items that I can see myself wearing for years and not items that are in trend and will eventually go out of style (quick.)

And I shit you not, literally after watching this Ted Talks video I started cleaning out my closet!

Earlier this year when I did some Spring cleaning, I donated 4 trash bags full of clothes, shoes and miscellaneous things I didn't need. I didn't think I would be compiling the same amount a few months later! These items were most likely the ones that were on my "Just In Case" list and now that I've come to my senses, I'm finally letting these go.

I'm sure it's going to take a few weeks or so or even months to get to where I need to be in this Minimal lifestyle, but I'm so ready for it. I'm tired of getting stressed over little things and being in bad moods. They say when your room is cluttered and messy, your mind is cluttered and messy as well. I want to feel that true happiness when I'm surrounded by less stuff. I can focus on my art, and I mean TRULY focus on my art. I want to focus on the things that are most important.

I started this 21 day Meditation that my sister recommended to me and honestly, it has really been hard for me to concentrate. I feel that if I were to get rid of all the clutter, I think I would have a better experience with meditating. Let's see if I feel any difference in the coming months!

My motto in life is and will always be, "Spend less on material things and MORE on experiences." My ultimate dream in life is to travel and instead of constantly daydreaming about places I want to see, I can make it happen if I continue to save my money rather than spending it on things that will only bring me temporary happiness. Traveling is such an amazing experience and it's something that brings you true happiness because it contains memories, and no one can take that away from you. Memories are more valuable than a new Louis Vuitton bag. Just saying.

If you guys are interesting in my journey, let me know and I'll be sure to update about it when I can.

And I shall leave you with these:

...take a look at your day-to-day lives. Take a look at whatever eats up the majority of your time. Is it checking email, or facebook, or watching TV? Is it shopping online or at retail stores? Is it working hard for a paycheck to buy stuff you don’t need? Things that won’t make you happy? Now, it’s not that we think that there’s anything inherently wrong with material possessions or working a 9-5. There’s not. We all need some stuff. We all have to pay the bills, right? It’s just that, when we put those things first, we tend to lose sight of our real priorities. We lose sight of life’s purpose. And so maybe getting some of the excess stuff out of the way, clearing the clutter from our lives can help us all focus on, well, everything that remains. Things like health, relationships, growth, contribution... community.

Not a perfect life, not even an easy life, but a simple one.

I've become obsessed.

Planner addict? Officially, yes. When I first bought my Filofax I told myself to just stick to one planner. I saw so many ladies collecting planners left and right and I thought to myself, I can't afford to do that nor do I want to. It's just too much for me!

About my Filofax, I failed to mention that I had ordered it in the color Electric Blue. I received it in the mail and the color wasn't what I wanted. I don't even think the color I received was even on the website anymore which I thought was odd. I didn't return it because I actually liked the color regardless and I just wanted to go straight to planning. I love the quality of my Filofax, I know that it'll last awhile but one thing I don't like is its stiffness. Laying it flat on the table was a struggle so every time I would want to write on my pages, I'd have to take them out of the rings and lay the pages on my table. It was annoying.

Then a couple weeks after, I stumbled across someone's IG feed and they posted about kikki.K's new time planner collection. In its gorgeous lilac color with gold foil diamonds...it was totally droolworthy!!

I mean, LOOK AT IT. It's so damn gorgeous. I couldn't help but stare at it for a minute and I just knew I had to get my hands on it before they sold out. I literally purchased it that same night (I seriously have this problem with impulse buys during the AM, lol) and couldn't stop thinking about it.

kikki.K is a Swedish brand based in Australia. It's no surprise that I was automatically attracted to kikki.K's designs because I'm a huge lover of Scandinavian designs!

Shipping was surprisingly fast. I was a bit annoyed that they didn't provide any sort of tracking, but I guess it's a fun surprise when it arrives on your doorstep when you least expect it.

I'm SO IN LOVE with my new kikki.K planner! It's everything that I wanted. For one thing, it lays flat which is a huge plus! There's more room and writing on a page is no problem at all. The pockets are much roomier than my Filofax and the pen loop stretches so I can bring along my chunky pens. So awesome, I can't get over it. I love holding it in my hands. it's not too bulky but it's the right amount of bulk to make me feel like I can accomplish everything on my schedule.

Sorry to say that I've quickly moved on from Filofax to kikki.K. I'll definitely be purchasing more from kikki.K because everything on their site is right up my creative alley. I want everything on there! Heck, if they decide to one day open up a shop here in San Diego, I'd want to work there in a heartbeat. HAH!

Lillian loves her new little pocket on the front page of my new kikki.K planner. I think she plans on staying here for awhile :)

Time to get planning for next week! Hope you all are having a great weekend xoxo

Filofax & Midori Traveler's Notebook

So the notebook hoarding continues and I don't regret it one bit.

Ariann is excited as I am!

Ariann is excited as I am!

If you're not familiar with these two, they're great companions for the creatives out there who love to doodle and organize their life in a...cute way. I've actually only discovered this less than a week ago just by lurking through Instagram. I immediately got hooked like crazy to the point where that same night, I spent literally 3 hours or so learning more about Filofax planners and how these ladies (young and old) go crazy over decorating their weeks with cute stickers and washi tape. I feel that by doing so, it is a great way to help motivate you accomplish everything on your agenda. Also, before heading off to bed my deliriousness took over and I ordered myself my very own Filofax. No regrets, okay! Then, a couple days after as I was awaiting its arrival, I went on over to Michael's to buy my first set of washi tape and stickers. I was laughing to myself because I felt like I was preparing myself for a newborn baby. I know, I've officially gone bonkers. Don't judge.

I've had these stamps for awhile. I can't wait to use them in my new books!

Stickers, stickers, stickers and other cute things.

Gel pens from Target

Gel pens from Target

I'm all about organizing and I felt that it was time for me to have a legit planner of my own. Sure, my iPhone is more convenient but it's such a distraction! I prefer to write my To-Do Lists down and things that I need to get done in the weeks ahead. To make it even better, I get to decorate the hell out of it and make it more personal and fun. And cute of course.

Once it arrived, I couldn't help but open and close the clasp and flip through the pages. Ahhh :) The only thing that irked me was that it only came with the weekly pages for 2015! Like seriously? We're half way through 2014, the least they could do was fill up starting from July 2014. C'monn. So, I ended up having to purchase a set of 2014 weekly pages on Etsy because they weren't available on the Filofax official website.

Also, did I forget to mention that in between all that, I went sort of sticker crazy on Etsy? Yeah. A bit. But hey, I can't resist cuteness.

Now onto the Midori Traveler's Notebook.

So alongside the Filofax the Midori appeared. There are many "Filofaxers" that also have a Midori and utilize it either as another planner or just to document their memories and/or travels. It may also serve as a scrapbook and journal which is what I would love to use it for as well as for my urbansketching.

My favorite thing about the Midori is that you can insert as many refills as you can. I just ordered the sketchbook refill which is supposed to be watercolor friendly.

I can't wait for all my notebook & planner necessities to arrive in the mail so I can officially play with them. I'm definitely going to add a lot of my personality and doodles to it. So exciting :D

Pizza Angel & Society 6 Shop now OPEN!

The whole time I was working on this piece, I was craving pizza. Big time.

I've been trying to play around with split complementary colors for this series if possible, and have been loving bright colored hair for my girls. This doodleina angel ain't sweet, she's pretty bada$$... with a size of cheese. ;)

I totally forgot to post about my launch on Society 6 but you can now purchase my work: HERE

Hope you all can help support and spread the word! Stay tuned for more, because there will definitely be more on this Doodleina x Junk Food series as well as more typography work!

June Favorites

I attempted to record three times in the past few days, and have failed at it. I just haven't been feeling like talking in front of a camera these days. My mood is SO off lately that I think to myself, why force myself to film when I simply don't want to? Besides, I don't think you'd be able to understand me even if I posted it because my voice was so soft and my neighbors were being a total bother. I really don't think I'll have the time to record this whole week so I'm just going to completely skip recording this video and go straight to blogging it. Typing my thoughts is way easier than having to edit a video anyway. Hope you guys enjoy it nonetheless!

For the month of June, the items that I've accumulated are mainly beauty items. I've been pretty strict with spending my money on makeup, but It's only when I completely run out that I head on over to Target, Ulta or Sephora to fulfill my makeup needs.

1. Fiorelli Tote bag. My Auntie from London came down to visit the first week of June and she brought along a few bags with her. This is 1/3 of the bags and I got first dibs, lol. This tote bag really spoke to me. It's really simple (just the way I like practically..EVERYTHING) and I've been wanting a tote bag for so long! I've had Madewell's tote bag on my "Wants" bookmark for a few months now and unfortunately, I can't afford it. (Wah!) This Fiorelli Tote Bag definitely makes up it! It's really sturdy and it fits my 13 inch Macbook Pro which is awesome! My favorite part about this bag is the gold plated accents on the envelope clutch pocket because it adds a hint of sophistication to it.

2. Semikolon pen. Hi, I'm Char and I'm a pen hoarder. I just LOVE pens. I purchased this pen at Blick and it was a total splurge. $35 and I don't regret it at all. I also bought the matching notebook which was supposed to be on this June Favorites list, but didn't have time to draw/paint it. Anyway, I write practically everyday (in my new awesome Semikolon notebook.) From To-Do Lists, typography and just notes and ideas for future projects of mine. The pens that I've used in the past were very inexpensive and I'm not sure if it has to do with the pressure I add when I write, but the ink from the pen just doesn't always come out the way it should. So I'm really glad I purchased this pen because I now don't have that problem and writing with this pen just flows so nicely! It's a heavy pen, but it doesn't bother me at all. If you're into writing, you should definitely try and invest in a pen because it will last you for a long time.

3. Stila Stay All Day Foundation & Concealer. This foundation is AH-MAY-ZING. I should've known since Stila's liquid eyeliner is my ultimate fave! I got it in the shade Honey, which I think is a tad bit light for me, but when I add my bronzer and blush it's really not noticeable. I haven't used the concealer enough to rave about it, but above the cap you pop it open for the concealer along with a tiny mirror. When you take the whole cap off, there lies another cap for the foundation itself. And then comes my favorite part. It comes with a handy dandy scooper! If you use liquid foundation, the ones that usually come in a glass bottle either has a pump or has nothing at all. If anything I much prefer the pump but this scooper surpasses everything. When you think you've ran out of foundation, you kind of forget about all the product that is left around the bottle and the corners. You can use the scooper to get every bit of foundation. I think you get your moneys worth with just that simple tool. Stila is my homegirl ;)

4. Benefit's Porefessional. I really don't understand why it took me so long! This easily became my new holy grail product of 2014, hands down. I have large pores and unfortunately, it may be genetic so I really can't do much about it. But I can use a product like Porefessional to reduce the appearance of it when I'm out in public, so Woo! Before this, I've been using NYX's Pore Filler which was okay at first but over time, it just stopped doing it's job. Porefessional is oil free and applies on silky smooth. When I apply this on before my foundation, I feel that it sets it so well and even makes blending it so much easier.

5. Wet N Wild matte lipstick in 'Bare It All'. I've always been a fan of Wet N Wild's matte lipsticks. But nude lipsticks, not so much. Bare it All is a exception though, because I think it looks nice with my skin tone. I like to use this underneath a darker shade of lipstick to create a nice ombre effect for my lips. Lately, I've been applying Bare it All all over my lips and then dabbing on Revlon's lipstick in Crimson at the center/edges of my lips and blending it out. It's such a nice everyday look in my opinion.

So that is all for my June Favorites! I know it's probably not as entertaining as my Youtube videos, but hopefully I'll be able to continue recording these videos by the end of July. Which by the way, Happy July loves!

Is there anything that you've been loving for the month of June? Let me know in the comments below I'd love to read about them! :)

Doodleinas & Junk

New Doodleina series! :)

So this idea came to me right after a nap I had the other day and as I flipped through good 'ol Instagram. Tons of people posting junk food that we can't help but drool over. Ugh, those cravings yo! So I thought of making a series with my Doodleinas and make it like their junk food confessions. I'm about to start on my second one quite soon, but I also have to finish my June Favorites. AHH. Thankfully, I don't have a deadline for this series, but I'm so pumped to make this all happen!

In some exciting news, I'm planning on posting these up on my Society 6 when I've completed a good amount for this series, so if you're interested you'll be able to purchase art prints, iphone cases, etc of my work! And I'm also planning on opening up my very own Etsy shop but not TOO soon, I've just been thinking about it. I have a lot of ideas so please be patient :)

I hope you guys can stay tuned for more from this series because it's something that really makes me happy! Cause, ya know...FOOD. Duh.

An update for ya'll

I was thinking of filming a video about the changes I'll be making, but I haven't been feeling well these past few days and have been busy with work, which is where I have to be at in less than an hour (so I'm here trying to type all my thoughts before then!)

I know I haven't been uploading videos on my YouTube channel, and if you've been waiting for something new I apologize. It's not that I'm lacking ideas, I have ideas that I've been wanting to put out there for you, but I just haven't found the proper time to do it all.

I haven't been in the mood these days, mainly with filming my Urban Sketch videos. When was the last one I uploaded? It might've been a month ago already....oh gosh. Urban Sketch was what started my YouTube channel and I initially wanted to have an Urban Sketch video up every Thursday. That went well for maybe a month an a half, but over time I've been getting interested in other things. For instance, my doodleinas.

Now, I DO plan on making more Urban Sketch, because I still thoroughly enjoy it...it really calms me. But trying to produce a video every week, it's not something I can do right now. If you remember from my Introduction video on my channel, I talked about how I want to document my life and things that make me happy in my sketchbooks and that I want to have a whole bookshelf filled with them for myself and my future family. It's still something I dream about. I just think with where I am right now, I can't and quite honestly, simply don't have the time and enthusiasm with filming an Urban Sketch video every week. Once in a while when I do have free time, YES. When I travel, ABSOLUTELY. So, if you have enjoyed those videos you'll see more in the future, just not as frequent when I first started.

For my channel, I still plan on doing my Monthly Favorite videos because they're just so fun to do and I feel that you learn more about me through those videos. I also plan on doing a What's In My Bag video sometime in the future. With what I have planned, it's going to take a while so please be patient :) I also want to continue making my Doodleina Speed Drawing videos, in hopes that they will improve. Also, I do want to start vlogging again..only when there's something interesting to show you all. Haha.

Now, with Instagram, I plan to be much more frequent with posting so if you're not already, follow me on there if you want to see more urban sketch and doodleinas! Follow me at: charvillena

It's much more convenient for me and I'm able to get more interaction with my followers + family and friends. I may start doing more 15 sec videos on Instagram with my doodleinas, trying to improve my stop motion "skills", lol. I did upload my first one a few days ago, so check it out on my Instagram feed :)

So that's what happening, folks. Hope you all understand where I'm coming from and that all of this made sense because I'm literally typing as quick as I can while eating my lunch. haha. I feel like I'm leaving a few things out, but if I remember them I'll let you girls know!

Have an awesome day and thanks for all the support and love!!

Found this sketchbook the other day and decided that I'd 'break it in' after a couple of years of not using it. Of course, I barely sketched in it. I must break my never-ending habit and fill this baby up till the last page! And this sketchbook is pretty thick, lol.

May Favorites

These are a few of my favorites things from last month :) Time is flying way too fast!

If you haven't yet, check out my new video and learn more about my faves.

Was there anything that you have been loving last month? Let me know in the comments and maybe I'll give it a try :)

Happy June, ya'll! xoxo

Speed Drawing: Doodleina (Julee)

After a week or so, I've uploaded my first speed drawing as well as an attempt at a stop-motion video!

This Doodleina turned out larger than I had planned, but it's okay!

Hopefully in the future, I will have much better lighting. I'm hoping to film more of these and try stop-motion outdoors. It may be tricky especially when I'll be dealing with winds but it's definitely something I'd like to do!  I'm already thinking of ideas on how to make it better, but I think it may require more time. I'm so excited about it though :)

A Sneak Peek

If you haven't watched my April Favorites video on my channel, once a month I compile a few of my favorite (general) items and moments/memories. The only difference is I draw and paint my favorite things rather than showing you the physical item. You know, gotta keep creating especially since my channel is focused on my art.

Here's a sneak peek of what to expect for my May favorites! This is 2/6 and I'm hoping I can get it done before the month ends.

As far as my YouTube channel goes, I know I haven't been uploading every Thursday (which was supposed to be my scheduled day for uploading) but I've been busy with everything that is my Life that I haven't had the time to produce content. I've been thinking up ideas for what to film, especially since these Urban Sketch videos may not happen as often as I had initially planned. I may start filming outdoors starting next week though, lets hope it pans out.

Periodically, I feel the need to rearrange my studio. This probably happens about 2-3 times a year. I just can't seem to concentrate when I'm working in a particular set-up for more than a few months. I just can't. Not only that, if my studio is messy, that inevitably leads to a messy mind. And that in turn hinders my creative juices from flowing the way it should. I'm definitely open to change in different forms because it helps you expand, grow.

Unfortunately, I didn't take a before picture because I moved my tables last night while I was filming a time-lapse video (which I hope turns out well!)

I definitely have more room now that my tables are against the wall and it feels great.

If you'd like a proper tour of my studio, let me know and maybe I'll film a video for you guys!

Before I end this post, here's a quick 'behind the scenes' from last nights studio situation. I got frustrated because my battery died so I had to wait almost an hour for it to fully charge in order for me to finish filming. Thankfully, my back-up battery came in on time today! Yay, thanks Amazon you never fail ;)

Now, I can get to work :) Hope your day is treating you well!

Here's something fairly new that I've been really enjoying on my Instagram. With the help of my awesome friend, Ianne, the series name "Doodleina" has slowly come into effect. As a kid, a couple of my favorite things were pop-up books and paper dolls. I also vaguely remember seeing short stop motion clips where paper dolls were utilized and were brought to life. There was something so magical about it for me!

My Doodleina's are my girly illustrations that are Thumbelina-sized. I bring them to life and take them on adventures in the real world. What I love most about this series is that I'm able to integrate two of my favorite creative outlets: Art and Photography.

Here's one that I worked on earlier today. I literally made this an hour or so before my sister and I got sushi for take-out. The thought of sushi gave me this spark of motivation to get right back into creating my doodleinas :)

I start off with pencil and then move right into my watercolor. I'm forever in love with my Pental water brush as it's so convenient when I'm not in my studio.

After pencil and watercolor, it's onto ink for completion! If you're curious, I currently use Faber-Castell PITT artist pens. Every now and then I use my microns.

Then I cut cut cut and viola! Doodleina is born. Homegirl right here is named Rhea. When I name my girls, I google "girl names" and randomly pick one that I see fit. I seem to like names that end with an "A", I don't know why.

Anyway, I'm hoping to really get into creating more doodleina's for ya! They're really fun to make and I've already been thinking of different scenario's for my future doodleina's. It's getting me excited and I can't wait to see the progression :)

Follow my blog with Bloglovin :)

I haven't maintained a proper blog for quite some time now, and my simplynewtral blog has been at a standstill as of late. I apologize for those who have been avid readers of that blog, but it just didn't feel like home anymore. It was the home for all my outfit photos, and it's been 4-5 months since I've been frequent in that department.

Since I've made my Art my main priority, I thought it would be best to relaunch my blog on squarespace :)

I'm really going to push myself to post on here often. For the last couple of weeks, I've been moving at a very leisurely pacedue to this humid SoCal weather and my jobbut I'm trying to pull myself together.

For this blog, I'm hoping to post more Work In Progress, my YouTube videos, continue my OOTD's in art form and if you're interested in some Slice Of Life posts (my travels, daily things) then let me know in the comments section!

Hope all is well, loves :)
